Brick Dimensions – Types, Sizes and Practical Guide

Choosing the right brick is one of the key stages of any construction project. The phrase “brick dimensions” appears very often because differences between individual brick types have a major impact on the appearance of the wall, material consumption and construction costs. In this article you will find exact dimensions of the most popular bricks, calculations per m² and practical building tips.

Standard brick size – what does the RF format mean?

The most common format in Europe is the so-called solid brick RF (normal format):

250 × 120 × 65 mm

This dimension applies to solid bricks as well as most facing and clinker bricks. Based on this size, typical wall thicknesses are designed:

  • 12 cm – wall laid on “half brick”,
  • 25 cm – wall laid on “one brick”,
  • 38 cm – wall laid on “one and a half bricks”.

Handmade bricks

Brick dimensions – most popular formats

1. Solid construction brick

  • 250 × 120 × 65 mm
  • weight approx. 3.3–3.8 kg
  • consumption: about 51 pcs/m² (half-brick wall)

2. Clinker brick

  • 250 × 120 × 65 mm – RF format
  • 240 × 115 × 71 mm – NF format
  • 290 × 90 × 52 mm – narrow facing format

3. Perforated brick

  • 250 × 120 × 65 mm
  • about 20–25% lighter than solid brick
  • better thermal insulation

4. Modular brick

  • 288 × 138 × 65 mm
  • mainly used in modern masonry systems

Projects

How many bricks per m²? – quick calculations

  • 12 cm wall → approx. 51 pcs/m²
  • 25 cm wall → approx. 102 pcs/m²
  • 38 cm wall → approx. 153 pcs/m²

It is always recommended to add 5–7% reserve for cutting and possible damage.

Facing bricks – does the size matter?

For facades, brick dimensions influence:

  • joint width (standard 10–12 mm),
  • visual rhythm of the elevation,
  • number of bricks per meter,
  • labor costs.

Elongated formats are becoming increasingly popular, for example:

  • 290 × 90 × 52 mm
  • 365 × 115 × 52 mm

They give the wall a more modern, horizontal character.

How to choose the right brick size for a project?

When selecting bricks, it is worth considering:

  1. Type of wall – structural or facade
  2. Masonry technique – traditional mortar or thin-layer system
  3. Bonding pattern
  4. Thermal insulation requirements

For load-bearing walls the RF format is most commonly used, while in facades architects often choose narrower and longer bricks.

Frequently asked questions about brick dimensions

Does every brick have a length of 25 cm?

No. Although 250 mm is the standard, formats from 210 to even 365 mm are available on the market.

What is the typical joint thickness?

The recommended thickness is 10–12 mm, which affects the final wall module.

Does clinker brick have the same size as solid brick?

Most often yes, but clinker bricks are available in a much wider range of formats.

Summary

Understanding the phrase “brick dimensions” is essential when planning construction works. The 250×120×65 mm standard still dominates, but the choice of format should be adapted to the character of the project and the function of the wall. Properly selected brick size allows optimization of costs and achieving the best visual effect.
